Stone carving is a skill in its own right. For as long as people have worked with stone there has been a division of labour.
Where the stone masons would turn a rough block into something perfectly square or any other symmetrical shape. This was done, using squares and straight edges, tape measure, and so on.
Then there is the stone carver, this person can no longer rely on his/her tools but solely depends on vision. One has to see the result before being able to carve it. A truly unique skill!
